AC Buying Guide
3 Star vs 5 Star AC: what changes in your electricity bill?
A 5-star AC is usually more efficient, but it is not automatically the best buy. The right answer depends on your usage months, electricity tariff, room size, and how much extra you pay upfront.
Quick rule
If you use the AC heavily for 5 to 8 months a year, shortlist 5-star and high-ISEER models first. If usage is light or the 5-star model costs much more, a strong 3-star inverter AC can still be the better value.

What BEE stars actually mean
BEE star rating is a quick efficiency label. For ACs, the newer label year matters because rating thresholds change over time. A current 5-star model with a strong ISEER value is a stronger long-term ownership signal than an old label claim.
When 5-star is worth it
Pick 5-star when the room is used daily, summer demand is high, and you expect to keep the AC for several years. The saving comes from lower units consumed, not from the sticker alone.
When 3-star is enough
Pick 3-star when use is occasional, the room is small, or the 5-star alternative has a large price premium. In that case, compare actual annual energy, ISEER, warranty, and current price before paying extra.
FAQs
Is a 5-star AC always cheaper to own than a 3-star AC?
Not always. A 5-star AC usually saves electricity, but the higher upfront price only makes sense if the running-cost saving covers that extra price during your ownership period.
Should I compare ISEER or BEE star rating first?
Use BEE star rating as the quick filter, then compare ISEER and annual energy consumption for the final shortlist because ISEER gives a more granular efficiency signal.
What electricity tariff should I use?
Use your actual billed per-unit rate if available. If you do not know it, ₹8 to ₹10 per unit is a practical starting range for many Indian households.
